Managed Services Shake-Up!

Managed Services seemed like the Holy Grail for distributors and IT service companies as everyone wanted to add managed services to their profit picture, so why is revenue falling? Offering and selling managed services sounds like a great thing and managing your network is important.Managed Services seemed like the Holy Grail for distributors and IT service companies as everyone wanted to add managed services to their profit picture. Offering and selling managed services sounds like a great thing and managing your network is important.

If you are a network service provider managing networks for others then you are familiar with the companies barking the most about their services. N-Able, Level Platforms, Silverback Technologies and Kaseya are the most prominent companies in the news. The current but shifting methodology is to place a small computer appliance at the client site where it talks to the local network and “phones home” the information to the IT company that sold it to them. The appliance or service provides monitoring and reporting for the local network priced by device. This is billed monthly and generates a recurring revenue for the IT company.

Revenue stream thinking is wonderful and if you can get your customer to pay you monthly for the service so your job as an IT company is easier that’s all the better but it’s not really making the clients business better. The truth about 95% of the networks installed is the monitoring and reporting is already in place on the network servers. If you run Linux or Microsoft Windows 2003 server, standard, small business edition(SBS) or enterprise the tools are already there with alerting email etc… Management reports are very useful and the managed service vendors customize them based on personal tastes.

It is no surprise then that the prices for the IT companies to get into the game has plummeted. Silverback just reduced the cost of it’s appliance based MSP product offering from $76,000 to $2,999. This should tell investors and others just how much fluff is involved here. Perhaps this entry fee should fall down to $299-499. Others have also had huge drops. The cost is spread out among clients and is designed to make the IT company have a single “console” to view the status of it’s client base. That’s a benefit to the IT company. These MSP tools help the IT company a lot more than they help the client.

Continuous Data Protection

The holy grail of data backup is that it is always backed up right to the last change you made to a document. Technology is available and affordable for continuous backup of data in the office. Servers can be configured so any user can recover accidentally deleted or over written files. Other backup solutions incorporate a small backup device installed on the network and backup is automatic from that point forward.

Best Buy Quietly Closing Geek Squad Stores

Is Best Buy finding the Geek Squad concept a failure as noticed by recent store closings? In Dallas on a great Preston Road location the very visible store has closed and had all signs of the store removed. A very prime upper class market that would seem to be the target demographic. Best Buy may be finding that computer service is vastly different than TV installation and that trained technicians are hard to come by on a massive scale. Unreal Tournament 3 DEMO

Unreal Tournament 3 DEMO

As most of you might know by this point last Friday October 12th 2007 the Unreal Tournament 3 DEMO came out released from epic games the new shooter will be the 4th installment of the unreal tournament series. Ranging from the 90’s when Unreal Tournament was released to Unreal Tournament 2003 and later updated to 2004 Epic games have been setting the standard for what a first person shooter should be.

The Unreal Tournament series is a fast paced action first person shooter set in the future. Although the game at this time is not on the shelves the DEMO has come out and I will be reviewing it.

unreal tournament 3

Graphics – As with the other unreal games this installment is at the top of it’s class in the graphic category. With the newly created Unreal 3 engine behind the hood it’s no wonder that old system of yours is probably lagging when you turn it all up. Unreal Tournament 3 is a direct x10 game that has the agaia physics built in so if you got a card you can take advantage. The recommends specs on this are a bit low if you ask me, a hardcore gamer that needs 60+ fps to survive would need to turn almost everything down to low to stay in the game if he has a 7800gt or below, faster cards ie. 8800 series cards should do a lot better. 9.5 out of 10

Sound – With all new custom mixes and sound for our new bloody tourney where could they have gone wrong? they didn’t !! The soundtrack for the new Unreal Tournament is the best to date sporting numerous new themes and mixes that pump you up while in the heat of battle. for more information go to their web site under audio and listen to them! Unreal Tournament 3I give audio a 10 out of 10

Gameplay – fast as the last with some obvious tweaks if you have played it at all. Most of the guns seemingly do more damage then they have in the past leaving you to be in a much quicker fire fight, a direct missile to the face and your good as gone. the gravity has been adjusted as well, no more crazy insane jumps, the double jump is still in the game but frankly its not going to save you. With the gameplay changes you should be able to see a noticeable faster gameplay style emerging. In the CTF arena all players have the use of what’s called a hover board giving them all access to a faster mode of transport … nice especially if you’ve just stolen the flag. This is counterbalanced by the fact that it’s easier to die as previously stated.
9 out of 10

Overview – All in all I think this is going to be another great game and one of the finest that we will see this year (and that’s saying a lot with all the good titles coming out in November) but take it from me if your system is pretty old you shouldn’t consider this game in your ball park, download the demo test drive it then see what your going to be capable of, cause it is that graphically intense! 9.5 out of 10
